It’s that time of year again! The weather is changing, students are being let out of school, and most importantly, it is time to start wearing those fun summer nail colors. Whether you spend your summers lounging by the pool or beach, gardening or traveling…perfectly manicured nails are always a must! However, with summer nails comes important nail maintenance. In order to keep your nails healthy all summer long be sure to follow this tips and tricks…

Don’t soak your nails! This is one of the many reasons why Varnish Lane is a waterless salon. Soaking your nails in water will cause them to expand. If you apply polish too soon while your nails are waterlogged, your polish will chip prematurely.

Protect your hands post-manicure. Use gloves while doing outdoor activities  like gardening to help protect your polish from chipping and lifting. Gloves help protect your cuticles from drying out due to soil and moisture.

Apply cuticle oil EVERY night. This will help to keep your cuticles from drying out in the summer heat and prevent hangnails and which can cause polish to peel and chip. Try Lauren B. Beauty Nail and Cuticle Balm for ideal hydration.

Moisturize your feet – daily.  A summer favorite, the open toed sandal, can be brutal for your feet and really dry them out. Try to apply moisturizer after showering.

Keep lotion on hand for travel. If you spend your summer traveling and flying a lot, it is important to moisturize. Recycled airplane air causes dryness around your nail beds. Prepare for a day at the pool with extra strengthening top-coat.  Prolonged exposure to water and chlorine can greatly weaken and dry out your nails and cuticles. Strengthen your manicure with an extra coat of top-coat before a day at the pool. Keep your polish color on hand for any touch ups of chips caused by water.

Avoid excessive sun exposure.  For most of us, spending as much time as possible under the sun to get that nice summer tan is always top priority, but too much sun exposure can cause damage not only to your skin, but also your nails. The sun and UV exposure can fade and ruin your manicure. Try a non-yellowing topcoat like Deborah Lippmann On A Clear Day Non Yellowing Top Coat. Keep you nails healthy from the inside out! It is easy to get dehydrated in the summer heat. Stay hydrated all summer long to keep your nails strong and healthy.
